Her mother, a gumiho, doesn’t trust humans and tells Miyoung to be careful just because Miyoung’s father was a human and betrayed her or something along those lines. Miyoung is a half-human-half-gumiho and as such, she has trust issues. I found them really adorable and straightforward. I liked the main characters, Miyoung and Jihoon as their own entities. I was interested in the mythology surrounding this book while reading something refreshing in the YA fantasy realm. She meets Jihoon who sees her in her true form and from there she has to keep her secret while both are attending the same school. She must feed on the energy of others in order to live. This book takes place in modern day Seoul, South Korea where Gu Miyoung, a seemingly normal 18-year-old lives as a gumiho, or a nine-tailed fox.

Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu has been in power for 24 years, and most Romanians live in poverty, exporting what they produce to unknowingly fund Ceaușescu’s obscenely extravagant lifestyle. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu, with his spiky hair, love of poetry and English, and crush on Liliana Pavel, is as much of a rebel as it’s possible to be in Bucharest, Romania, in 1989. He's a fine minister, though he could use a wife to manage things. WEEKS.Īnd what do the children think? That he's the best father in the world. The orphan girl lived under the same roof as the father. The children even adopted an orphan girl for two weeks before he noticed. None of his children ever had much to eat, they ran around in literal rags and at one point, one child watched as her pet rooster was slaughtered and served for dinner. He neglects his children, his house and his life in order to be a better minister. Their widowed minister father is the worst man I've read about in a long time. Every sin they commit or moment of disobedience can be traced back to an gosh-darn honest mistake - they could do no wrong and I hated them for it. Me.Īnne's kids are secondary to the "Mary-Sue" Meredith clan - a wholesome, cherub-faced group of sorely neglected children who adore their minister father and God with all their heart. Montgomery doubled the amount of precocious children and shoves Anne's kids off to the side. Well, if that wasn't bad enough, book 7 has Anne as a tertiary character. To catch you up - book 6 of ANNE of Green Gables demoted Anne to a secondary character and her six precocious (obnoxious) children shared the spotlight. I thought Book 6 was rock bottom - turns out I was wrong. Over ten Mary-Sues in one book? Got to be a record. The simple fact of the matter is Tolkien was not the original master that everyone claims: he simply reinvented the genre. But it is a layman's comment and one that, in Shannara's case, is definitely not on the mark. Whether this is because there is a wizard, a quest, or a variety of races, I'm not sure. However, sadly, Brooks' work has oftentimes been unfairly called a pale imitation of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Written across a span of 8 years crossing the end of the 70's and early 80's, Terry Brooks first leap into the realm of Shannara was impressive, to say the least. And while I can't speak for every book that has received this “critique,” I can speak for Terry Brooks' Shannara Trilogy. One of the more frustrating assertions to come from the so called “literary critics” are claims that “so and so author” is copying “so and so.” They use this derogatory critique as a way to deprive the author of any originality in their storytelling. How cute are those covers?įTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. Anyway, enough of my parenting/life woes, because I do have reviews to share today for two wonderful reads that I’ve enjoyed recently. I did a couple of posts on instagram and then just wanted to hide in a blanket fort coloring the rest of the weekend. Add in soccer practice for my son, helping him prep for tomorrow’s AP exam, and then ending the week in pure frustration when I got a call from the school Principal because my son got caught doing something he shouldn’t have been doing, and there just wasn’t much motivation or energy left for blogging. The other person who does my job at work was on vacation all last week so I had to cover for her and it was a bit hectic. Hey everyone! I want to start off by apologizing in advance for the fact that I’m yet again behind on blog visits. Death is also horribly unfair in “The Meadow”. Ray, a man born and raised in nature, also dies in an ironic, unexplained way, freezing to death with his pants down in the woods. Yet, he dies in a hospital for men instead of in the wilderness as he would have wanted. Indeed he is the human embodiment of nature in the novel, being compared frequently to the cunning coyote who visits his meadow. Lyle, for instance, is one of the main characters who spends a lot of his time in nature. He shows this by frequently killing off his most respectable characters in his novel.Īlmost all the main characters in “The Meadow” die, some in obscene ways, others in seemingly unfair, ironic ways, showing that nature is all-powerful and death is inevitable. Galvin includes death regularly to show that it is natural and inevitable – that people are just passing through, whereas wilderness lasts forever. Death is a recurring theme in The Meadow. When the pastor comes calling to remind Ruthie's mother that it is their family's turn to supply the church Christmas tree - an annual village tradition - she and Ruthie set out, the night before Christmas Eve, to find the perfect balsam fir, and to make good on their obligation. It is Christmas time in the year 1918, and Ruthie and her mother await the return of Ruthie's father, off fighting in World War I, in this poignant and heart-satisfying holiday tale set in a small Appalachian village. What I mean by that is the family members love and care for one another and despite their financial shortcomings they are courageous, supportive, creative and thoughtful.Īnd, of course there is a happy ending - why wouldn't there be for a picture book for the 4–8-year-old listeners. They depict simple country life in an Appalachian village getting prepared for Christmas while The Great War goes on across the pond. What can I say? Some might know why this is especially true for me.įirst off, the drawings are right up my alley. So, I didn't get to this in time for Christmas, but the Holiday survives all year long in my heart. This unforgettable tale, illustrated by Caldecott Medalist Barbara Cooney, has become a seasonal classic-a touching and joyful story about courage and the power of family.
